This Friday, the New Amsterdam cruise ship, which is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Tourism, arrived at the port of Acajutla with approximately 2,800 passengers on board.

Tourists visit destinations such as the city of San Julián in Sonsonate, the Archaeological Park of San Andres, Cerro Verde, the Ilamatepec volcano, and the Historic Center of San Salvador.

The New Amsterdam cruise ship is 285 meters long and is one of the largest ships received by the Port of Acajutla.

The Dutch company’s ship is the second to arrive for the 2023-2024 cruise season, which began in October.

On September 13, Tourism Minister Morena Valdez assured that El Salvador will receive approximately 20 cruise ships during the high season from October 2023 to May 2024.

In the last cruise season, Sepa registered 12 ships in El Salvador’s ports.

Data shared by Cepa shows that 17,096 visitors were registered through these 12 ships that served the port of Acajutla. The agency assured that the tourists visited various destinations during their stay and generated $1.4 million in foreign exchange.

The Ministry of Tourism predicts that foreign exchange earnings from tourism will reach $2.9 billion in 2023.

Tourism Secretary Morena Valdes said 75% of this year’s tourist arrival target has already been achieved.

According to Ministry of Tourism statistics, so far this year the country has received around 2.9 million tourists by 2023, and this figure is expected to increase further by the end of the year.

The official added that about 75% of that goal had already been achieved by the end of August.

So far, Surf City has served as a hub connecting multiple destinations in Central America.

Minister Valdes shared these predictions at a meeting of the 2023 Central American Forum for Financial Inclusion, led by the United Nations Women’s Agency.

“El Salvador has made tourism one of the economic engines of development. There is no doubt that women’s leadership in this sector is a transformative force that will take this sector to a new level,” the official said.
